Personal Entry No. 61
My Critical Language Scholarship application is finished and ready to be submitted, but I need to wait for my Russian professor to send in her letter of reference...before 11:59 P.M. PST. Needless to say, my stomach is churning. (ETA: My professor pulled through -- hurrah!)

More importantly: via [livejournal.com profile] la_vie_noire, the recent cholera outbreak in Haiti is growing more deadly, with the death toll now over 900. What's worse is that U.N. officers may have unwittingly carried this particular strain of the disease with them, but we still need to wait for confirmation of that (even though some desperate Haitians have not).

In other news, if you have any concerns about the Higgs boson, read this article on progress made at the CERN research center. I can't believe we might be able to definitively prove its existence in as little as a year!

And finally for something more pleasant, here's a meme that's been going around. I think I filled it out a little while after I first signed up for a LiveJournal account, so it'll be interesting to see how my answers for certain series have changed.

It won't really do anything but good luck on your application.

I am definitely interested in that "it was my chemist uncle's idea" tag but further searches reveal nothing. :C Wow, in that CERN article... Less than a year? "NEW RESULTS ALL THE TIME" ? The limits of the human is simply amazing. And the cholera news is just depressing.

Uh, meme! Tegami Bachi or XxxHolic/TRC?

Thank you!

The reference in the other entry with that tag is "300 ml Florence Flask with flowers in it." I got it at my cousin's wedding several years ago, and I believe it was my uncle's idea to give out flasks as gifts for the guests. He's a chemistry professor, as well as an amazing person with a great sense of humor, compassion even for insects, and a strong dislike of the nonsense that is Musical Theater.

I'll go for Tegami Bachi!

▌ favorite character → Sylvette, due to her great inner strength and her mad wheelchair skills. Also Dr. Thunderland.
▌ least favorite character → I don't really have one (even though I hated the human Roda with a passion when she first appeared), but I do find Lawrence strange and annoying as a character. Asada keeps on depicting him as an extremely stereotypical villain, despite the fact that he isn't.
▌ prettiest character → Niche's sister, if only she would wear pants more often.
▌ character I think is AWESOME → Valentine for being Valentine, and Garrard for effortlessly manipulating the entire Bee Hive to send Gauche to him while making it function more efficiently.
▌ favorite pairing → I...don't think I have one. I really hope that Lag, Sylvette, and Gauche get a happy ending together, though.
▌ favorite episode → The lighthouse chapter.
▌ unpopular opinion → I think it's entirely appropriate that Lag cries so much. He's an emotional young boy with no parents, a difficult job, and a lot of problems.

CCS for the meme!

▌ favorite character → Clow. Very shocking, I know.
▌ least favorite character → I used to dislike Nadeshiko, but now I think I don't have a "least favorite" character anymore. Nakuru can be irritating for her selfishness and generalizations, though.
▌ prettiest character → ...Kaho?
▌ character I think is AWESOME → Sakura!
▌ favorite pairing → Touya/Yukito. (I can't say Clow/Yuuko since she wasn't introduced yet, right?) I'm also fond of Tomoyo's relationship with Sakura.
▌ favorite episode → Episode 68, or where Sakura met Clow in person. Their interaction together was sweet and saddening, and the art direction was beautiful. It's too bad somebody decided to put that embarrassing insert song in near the end.
▌ unpopular opinion → The second movie was a horrible piece of fanservice that made absolutely no sense.

Ohh, I like the song! Although it's... horrible in that episode, lol.

And we share the favorite episode 8D /loves the Clow flashbacks the most, both in the manga and anime!

... Why did you dislike Nadeshiko?

Clow doesn't really lend himself to J-pop. (At least, I think it was J-pop -- I heard the song for the first time in that episode, and I quickly turned my speakers off in horror.)

Well, I didn't put that much thought into her character when I first read through CCS, and the whole business with Queen Nadeshiko in TRC made me dislike the CCS Nadeshiko by default. (I dislike the TRC version because, despite her ultimately giving up her life for Sakura's sake, she often comes across as a beautiful but disinterested mother who's too willing to transfer the responsibility for Sakura's safety to Syaoran. Yes, I know she was forced to do that because of outside powers, but CLAMP never told us what exactly those powers were, so I assume that she was just another pawn in F.W.R.'s plan. Heck, he could have killed the real Nadeshiko and replaced her with one of his clones.)

All that aside, I find that I like CCS!Nadeshiko much more after I think about her relationship with Fujitaka and her children, and about the sacrifices she made to keep her family happy.

Meme-wise, Fullmetal Alchemist!

▌ favorite character → Van Hohenheim, followed closely by Al. And Heinkel!
▌ least favorite character → Shou Tucker for obvious reasons, but otherwise I don't strongly dislike a lot of characters in this series. Arakawa does a fairly good job of making her villains either understandable or at least interesting.
▌ prettiest character → This is hard. Um, Lust? There's also Karley (http://fma.wikia.com/wiki/Karley), the dashing communications officer.
▌ character I think is AWESOME → Fu, even though I don't enjoy thinking about the event that made him so. Also, Heinkel again.
▌ favorite pairing → I don't really have one, to be honest. I'm happy with the canon pairings, and if pressed I'd say that I like Al/Mei the most.
▌ favorite episode → Admittedly, I thought it was hilarious when Heinkel, Darius, and Ed made their great escape in the "awesome" car.
▌ unpopular opinion → The ending of the manga was good enough, but it was nowhere near perfect -- I think it lost a lot of the moral complexity that Arakawa had built up throughout the series.

▌ favorite character → Kazuhiko.
▌ least favorite character → This is difficult to say since there are so few major characters in the first place, but possibly A. I could neither understand him nor relate to him on any level at all.
▌ prettiest character → Suu and Oruha, definitely!
▌ character I think is AWESOME → Bors, the magnificent bastard. General Ko (the old lady who orders Kazuhiko around) is a close second.
▌ favorite pairing → Kazuhiko/Oruha.
▌ favorite episode → I think I prefer the fourth book best.
▌ unpopular opinion → I don't care that much about Gingetsu. That could change if CLAMP includes his backstory or gives him better character development in the next book (if it ever comes out, that is).

Good luck for the application! Not being able to anything but wait for others to finish their part of something important like that is always stressful. *gets flashbacks from her last year at uni*

For the meme... Holic? ;;

Thank you! Everything turned out well in the end, so all I have to do now is bite my fingernails and wait until March.

▌ favorite character → Unfortunately, I feel ambivalent at best toward the major characters at this point. I'll say Himawari.
▌ least favorite character → I don't dislike Watanuki now as much as I did at the beginning of the "Rou" segment, so my least favorite character is probably Haruka.
▌ prettiest character → Kohane.
▌ character I think is AWESOME → By this point, no one. This was never a series that lended itself to AWESOME, though.
▌ favorite pairing → Clow/Yuuko!
▌ favorite episode → The arc where Watanuki met the "mother" who had lost her son. It had some of the most beautiful line work and layouts of the entire series, and I nearly cried at the conclusion.
▌ unpopular opinion → I...actually liked and identified with the Cooking Lady. /dodges tomatoes

I'm glad to hear that!

I love the arc where Watanuki met that woman too. It's so sad, and has such a beautiful conclusion. My favorite arc is probably the one with the spider lady and Watanuki's eye though, mostly because of Yuuko's words at the end of it.

Ahaha, the cooking lady. I didn't mind her that much either, it was just that her arc seemed to go on forever while everything was heading towards the grand finale on the TRC side, which made it look more than a little trivial in comparison. XD

▌ favorite character → Clow and Sakura (both the original and the clone).
▌ least favorite character → The Vampire Twins. Add in the Vampire Hunters for a bonus!
▌ prettiest character → All of the characters except for Fei Wang Read and those throwaway villains in Koryo seem to be physically perfect, so I'm having trouble choosing! I'll say Sakura.
▌ character I think is AWESOME → Kurogane, especially during the last arc!
▌ favorite pairing → Clow/Yuuko again.
▌ favorite episode → It's hard to choose, but I enjoyed the world-building arcs near the beginning of the series -- the Country of Mist, that weird land with the rabbit people, and so on.
▌ unpopular opinion → This isn't to say that I dislike him, but I don't care about Fay at all for some reason. To me he's like the wallpaper for both the overall plot and Kurogane's character development.
