Personal Entry No. 55
So, it's been, um, over a month since I last posted here. I'm so sorry that I've missed all of your posts since then! Please update me on things in the comments.

I'm typing this from my (very small) room at Middlebury College, which is nothing short of beautiful; apparently the school was the most expensive college in the United States at some point, which certainly shows in the architecture of the buildings. The very small room has a great view of the campus and the hills in the distance, and the residence hall is a wonder to look at. This is good, because my mattress feels like poured concrete. I haven't gotten a lot of sleep for the past few days due to all of the traveling, so I almost cried when I laid down on it.

I spent the weeks between coming home and arriving at Middlebury with my family -- e.g., cleaning the house, making meals, and slaying "big monsters with big weapons" in Monster Hunter Tri.1 (That game is a bundle of contradictions: it's the same thing over and over again, yet it doesn't get old!) It was good -- I appreciate the time I can spend with them a lot more these days, even when my siblings get on my nerves. There's a large photo post coming up; I just need to get over two hours to myself to upload the pictures and code it, since the opening weekend for the Russian Language School has been a parade of registrations, exams, and mandatory social events. Things should settle down once I get a daily schedule, fortunately!

That brings up an important question... )

All that aside: most of my fandoms have exploded, apparently. I haven't yet read the promotional materials for The Neverending Manga xxxHOLiC's move to Bessatsu Shonen, though -- and I haven't actually read the new chapter, either. Apparently nothing important happened, but then again, nothing important has happened for the entirety of "Rou." It might be a good idea to just leave it alone and come back to it in five years.

I have read the final chapter of FMA, and...I could write a longer post on it later, and I most likely will. I'll just say that I enjoyed it very much, and that it hit mostly the right points for me. That means that I almost cheered out loud at how awesome it was.

1One of the developers literally said that the series is based on killing really big monsters with really big weapons. At least someone is being honest about the real reason video games exist, right?

I have 83 images so far for the upcoming tutorial at [livejournal.com profile] momoizumu--that's the "coloring" section down! I'll work on the background and post-production sections over the break, along with the request images.

Behind Door No. One, tutorial preview with nifty cut-away effect! )

Behind Door No. 2, worthless blocks of text! )

All classes are proceeding smoothly, even if I can't speak up in POL 286: Conflict Resolution as much as I'd like to. That said, I wish I knew what went through our Japanese professor's head when one of the students asked her if she would like to drink some homemade cookies.

Speaking of foreign languages: I received financial aid for the Middlebury Summer Language program! The school raised its tuition rate, and the aid I received covers only about a third of it, so I'm currently looking into the FAFSA loan they offered. When all is said and done, there's a good chance that I'll be going to the Russian school this summer. :`)

Some useless information about my current health... )

...a slightly more useful handwriting meme... )

...and some entirely useless thoughts on Fandom Development! )

That aside, how have you been?

Above all else, take a look at this link: Relief for victims of Typhoon Ketsana/Ondoy. Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] baliwnababae for posting the original entry, and to [livejournal.com profile] asherfoxx for linking to it.

ETA: Read this article. It's not often that one reads about individual acts of heroism like that, and it's all the more honorable to me in part because of my current studies (i.e., atrocities committed by Allied and Japanese soldiers in Asia and the Pacific Theater).

The girl was singing in a church choir,/ About the weary abroad, far away... )

On a decidedly more minor note, I think I'll postpone writing about TRC until the epilogue is released next week.

Coloring Post No. 1
As some people have requested them, here are all of the large scans that I've colored since January (i.e., when I first started making icons). You can use them for whatever purpose you like--banners, profile images, and possibly even courageous headbands. There aren't too many, since I prefer working with smaller bases, and some of them are jagged and unpleasant to the eye, but I hope you can put them to good use!

[03] Kobato.
[11] Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE
[05] xxxHOLiC
[04] Miscellaneous CLAMP works (Chobits, Tokyo Babylon, and X)
[09] Miscellaneous works (After School Nightmare, Bleach, Cheong Hang Gi, otona・pink, Yasashii Ryuu no Koroshikata, and Vampire Knight)

Icon Post No. 3
After over two months, the requests are finally finished! If there are any changes you would like me to make, or if you see any mistakes with your request, please tell me.

The icons are arranged alphabetically by the names of those who requested them, with the exception of icons no. 6 through 14 ([livejournal.com profile] hebba18 and [livejournal.com profile] laury_kos requested the same image) and icons no. 118 and 119. Note that icons no. 19, 45, 46, 54, 55, 62, 83, 84, and 99 are nonshareable; they've been marked in green. If you want your icons to be nonshareable as well, then don't hesitate to tell me! Please keep in mind that if you received a large amount of icons, some of them by necessity will have to be kept shareable (as no one should hoard icons).

On to the requests!

Personal Entry No. 11

I took this last week; the sunset was far more beautiful than this. (Should I start expecting less of myself and my camera and start running my photographs through Photoshop? I'm just an amateur, though, so it doesn't matter all too much.)

I'm looking to post fewer CLAMP-related things in my personal posts, since I think you all get enough of that in the comms and your own journals, so...

Opera, n. A play representing life in another world, whose inhabitants have no speech other than song, no motions but gestures and no postures but attitudes. )

One can only imagine what the entry for Pop Music would have looked like. )

Meanwhile, in Fandomia...(CCS Costume Design, a Discovery, and Others.) )

Personal Entry No. 10
As many of you have likely read, International Blog Against Racism Week is currently underway; the reason why I'm posting at such an ungodly hour is because I've just finished tagging everything in the del.icio.us inbox and all of the entries posted here. It's more my fault that I had to stay up so late to do this, but it was worth it--take a look at some of the entries (or all of them. There are many remarkable pieces in there.) Thank you to everyone who contributed today!

Now, so far as the icon requests are concerned: I'm going to be taking one more requester before I close the requests post, as I've finished several of the icons already. Also, [livejournal.com profile] asherfoxx, and [livejournal.com profile] kyoy: you haven't chosen your images yet, so please try to do so as soon as you can.

I'd like to post an idea concerning xxxHOLiC here, but I've got enough to say that I'd rather wait until tomorrow. It's not particularly important, nor is it mind-bending, but I think it has some merit. On another note, I don't appreciate a certain someone calling a certain character a "Don Juan." He's been proven to be nothing other than a kind and responsible man, unless Ms. Ohkawa decides to do what I fear she's going to do.

Of course, this meme is entirely mind-bending. )

Icon Post No. 2
First and foremost: I apologize to those who weren't looking for more Syaoran and Sakura icons. In order to set things right, I'll be accepting requests here! As an example of what a filled request may look like, I've included all thirty of the icons I made for [livejournal.com profile] jlarinda to celebrate her predicting a certain plot twist in an otherwise unpredictable story.

Setting that aside, please enjoy the icons! If there are any changes or improvements you wish to be made, then don't hesitate to tell me.

Tutorial No. 2: Layer Effects and You
This is a simpler yet deeper tutorial than the first, as it focuses on how one can manipulate layer modes (also known as "blending modes"). While actually turning these modes on and off isn't difficult at all, one needs a good amount of skill to use them to their full potential.

There are surprisingly few tutorials available that discuss layer modes and their uses; this is likely due to the perceived notion that the use of such modes is intuitive. To an extent, it is--but that isn't always the case! Some people pick it up quickly, while others never quite understand it.

This tutorial--save for the portions that use the Heal Brush--can be used for nearly all image-editing programs. Also, please note that it is very, very long, and very image-heavy.

The wonderful world of layer modes! )

Icon Post No. 1
These were made over the course of four months, so the icons span a range of quality and styles (i.e., some look as though I've ripped off CLAMP, others look as though I've ripped off scape, and still others look as though they were tossed into the pop blender of peril). If there are any that you think can and should be improved, please tell me! I'll try to fix them for you.

On to the icons!
