Holiday Requests 2011

Comment with: a day, a fandom, a pairing, and a prompt, and I will do something* for you, to be posted on the day you claimed. Any fandom you know I'm familiar with is fair game, though I reserve the right to ask for a different prompt if you pick something I don't feel comfortable with, or a fandom I haven't been into in a long time.

*"Do something" here can mean "make colored icons," "produce an uncolored drawing" (to avoid the two-year-long Christmas debacle!), "make a music mix," or even "compose a MIDI ditty."

Due to the small size of my friends list and my winter break, I decided to limit the requests to thirteen. If more people are interested, though, I'll be more than happy to expand the list! My vacation lasts until January 17th.

December 20th:
December 21st: [livejournal.com profile] ianthefira, Xelha and Kalas/Mira (Baten Kaitos)
December 22nd:
December 23rd:
December 24th:
December 25th:
December 26th: [livejournal.com profile] lavender88, music mix for cherry-blossom viewing or Tegami Bachi-related thing
December 27th: [livejournal.com profile] easternamour, colored icons (Kami-sama Hajimemashita)
December 28th: [livejournal.com profile] mairenn_k, TRC and/or xxxHOLiC music mix
December 29th: [livejournal.com profile] mina_akira, Sophie and Howl (Howl's Moving Castle)
December 30th:
December 31st:
January 1st: [livejournal.com profile] dropsofviolet, Yuuko and/or Clow/New Year's or Holiday

As a small warning, requests made for the 24th and 25th may end up being posted close to midnight.

This is my last week of the semester, and I have the following to do before I can go home in any semblance of self-respect:

1) Write a twelve-page paper on textile and garment industries in contemporary China by the 13th.
2) Take a grammar exam for Japanese on the 14th. (It's not a real final, thank goodness!)
3) Write roughly 4,000 words for a take-home final exam.
4) Go to my last voice lesson on Tuesday. (Okay, this will be fun.)
5) Recite a poem at Monday's Russian dinner.
6) Complete five graduate school applications by the 15th. (Cornell, thank you so much for having a January 1st deadline. Harvard, curse you for using such tiny spaces on an online application.)

I'm doing fine -- I'm tired and I want to eat good food at home, but overall I'm doing fine!

Okay, you got it!

I'll do my best. Thanks for your encouragement, Mina!

[identity profile] ianthefira.livejournal.com 2011-12-11 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
OK, um, December 21st, and Xelha and Kalas from Baten Kaitos! Prompt: Mira. Yeah, anything about Mira is fine.

I think I'm doing this right anyway!

[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
You know, ever since I played Baten Kaitos, I haven't been able to eat lemon meringue pie without thinking of Parnasse.

Anyway, request noted!

[identity profile] ianthefira.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I always wondered if people eating the town was a regular problem or not.

[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
A little-known fact about the development of Baten Kaitos Origins: the inspiration for the play-dough city of Sedna actually came from the original plans for Parnasse, which was supposed to be a model made from real candy, pastries, and cream. The model ended up unused when the production team ate it.

[identity profile] ianthefira.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, that's hilarious! I never knew that. Though I'd probably eat the model too.

Sedna is one of my favorite locations, also.

[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You-you didn't take that seriously, did you?! (It would be nice to see a real-life (http://www.odditycentral.com/news/chinese-artist-creates-edible-model-of-shanghai.html) Parnasse (http://www.odditycentral.com/news/sculptor-carves-room-entirely-out-of-chocolate.html), though.) I wonder if any of the pieces from Sedna are still floating around the developers' offices or homes?

[identity profile] ianthefira.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaah I thought you were being serious!! I don't know all the producer commentary and it sounds like something they'd go and do D:

January 1 sounds good, and anything with Yuuko or Clow would be awesome. New Years or holiday-themed if you'd like a prompt, but feel free to disregard.

Good luck with all of your end-of-semester busyness! You can totally do it, so don't get discouraged!

[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Got it! Just to clarify, did you want Yuuko or Clow alone, or would you be open to having both of them together?

Thank you!

[personal profile] pleonasm 2011-12-12 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
They're great together too! So together, apart, whatever moves you. :3

[identity profile] mairenn-k.livejournal.com 2011-12-11 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's good to hear from you again! Good luck for all those things you listed, and make sure you get some good rest once you're done with everything.

I'll take December 28th! Um, and maybe a TRC or/and Holic-related music mix? Either a more 'general' one, or for some certain theme or character/s, if you'd rather do that. :3

[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I'm hoping to avoid becoming nocturnal this week.

If there are certain characters or themes you'd really like to see, I'd be happy to work toward them! I can do a general mix, too, of course.

[identity profile] mairenn-k.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Fei Wang Reed Just kidding. Hm, something focusing on the female characters, maybe? Or maybe the characters' relationships overall, because they're so intertwined I guess it'd be hard to separate them. Or feel free to surprise me, if you have any theme that you would like to work toward yourself! I'm so indecisive, gah. /o\

[identity profile] lavender88.livejournal.com 2011-12-11 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, shameful admission time: Gaaaaahh I'm not really confident about that Haruki Murakami mix because I don't have the words to accurately pinpoint what is it that makes a Murakami book what it is, let alone using music! I thought about a jazz mix, but that'd be such a cop out and basically I'm just putting it out here because I was wondering if you have backup requests or if I could post something else in its place.........

That said, welcome back! I hope everything goes well for you and you'd be able to enjoy your holiday at home wholeheartedly ♥

[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
I completely understand! Having just finished reading IQ84, I realized that a "Haruki Murakami" fanmix would be hard to make without falling back on jazz pieces. How would you feel about making an acoustic Kobato fanmix?

Thank you! Coincidentally, weren't you supposed to have a holiday request to put up on the list up there? /nudge

[identity profile] lavender88.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds alright to me, but I'll give you fair warning that most likely it'll end up being an acoustic Fujibato mix! And it might be a little late, but yep, I think I've got it!

Right. In which case, I'll take December 27th: a mix for a cherry blossoms viewing (i believe in preparing early, plus it's going to be the new year soon, it'll come in handy!) or anything Tegami Bachi related ♥

[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Feel free to take your time with it!

This will be an interesting request to fill out. D:

[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, but there's a minor problem: [livejournal.com profile] easternamour commented about half an hour before you asking for the 27th. Is it okay that I moved your request to the 26th, or would you prefer a different day?

[identity profile] lavender88.livejournal.com 2011-12-13 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
It's alright by me! ♥

[identity profile] easternamour.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
Wow! You're a busy gal! Good luck w/ all of your grad school apps! I know how stressful that can be!

Anyways, I claim December 27th. May I please have some colored icons from this image?

(I hope the pic is good enough...the quality is kind of bad...)

Here's a colored image of the couple as a reference:

Also, how was 1Q84? I want to read that novel over my summer break :)

I'm glad that all is well!

[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com 2011-12-12 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I'll get your request up on the list, too -- that scan is fine.

To be honest (and to avoid spoilers as much as possible), I didn't enjoy IQ84 as much as Murakami's previous works. Part of the reason could be the way the plot is distributed over the book: the single-volume English release, as you probably already know, used to be three volumes in Japanese, and so there are slight shifts between the "volumes" in the book. The first volume is well-constructed and intriguing, with very emotive and detailed descriptions of the characters and atmosphere; the second volume layers on more supernatural and conspiratorial content, but it also introduces some very disturbing elements. The plot -- and some of the characters' personalities -- begins to slow down and unravel in a bad way near the end of the second volume, with the third volume taking unnecessary detours and reaching a complete crawl by the last chapters.

Even so, I think the book is worth it for the excellent writing and plot build-up of the first three quarters. I certainly couldn't put it down, that's for sure.

I hope everything is well with you, too!

[identity profile] easternamour.livejournal.com 2011-12-15 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Well! Thanks for accepting my request :)

Yeah, I have been reading a lot of reviews that are similar to your response to the Haruki Murakami novel. A lot of them prefer his previous works and described 1Q84 as too "lengthy." Hmmm...I'm still willing to read it though, since I love his novels and short stories. Thanks for the info :)

I'm okay. I'm going to attend a winter session class so I won't have much a break. I can't for Christmas though :)

Thanks again for everything!
