Personal Entry No. 66 (Or: Entry No. 61, the Conclusion)
I donated blood at around 7:00 P.M. today, and I'm glad I worked up the courage to go! It really bodes well that I got through the whole process without feeling too dizzy or sick, especially since my first blood donation saw me nearly passing out at the snack table. It's a sign that I'm in good health, and that my anemia is long gone.

That aside, I promised some more information about the CLS program, and more information you shall have...under the cut, of course!

1) "The spirit and intent of the CLS Program [is] to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries." Participants in the program essentially serve as cultural diplomats-of-sorts as they study in their host countries.

2) Over 5,200 applications for the entire program were received, but only 575 scholarships were awarded, meaning that roughly 11% of the applicants were accepted. This is starting to sound like an information packet...

3) There is a special section on the acceptance form that requests applicants to "acknowledge that [theirs] are not official Department of State websites, and that the views and information presented are their own and do not represent the CLS Program or the U.S. Department of State." This raises some funny possibilities when the CLS participants write positively about heir host countries: "I think Russia and the United States are going to have a beautiful relationship in future years!...This view does not represent the CLS Program or the U.S. Department of State."

4) I'll be leaving for the orientation at Washington D.C. sometime between June 6 and June 16, depending on what city I'm assigned to...assuming that the orientations are different for each city, that is. I just hope the weather isn't too hot down there, since the capital turns into a small sun every summer.

That's...actually, that's about it for now. I have a lot of paperwork to print out, sign, and scan in again by the 15th of March, and will find out which city I'll be going to on March 1st.

I've been meaning to post this for ages -- the new challenge at [livejournal.com profile] cloverbooks needs to wait!

Thank you so much for the birthday wishes!

I've often been thinking that I should be donating blood too - I don't really have a reason not to do it - but for some reason I never did. I should stop being so lazy and check it up.

About the CLS program: Wow, 5,200 applications? You were really lucky, then! It sounds like it's going to be a great experience - I would be very curious to find out which city I'd be going to if I were you, haha. Good luck for the paperwork!

Also, those pictures are all very pretty. ♥

You're welcome! I noticed that the third season of Natsume Yuujinchou was announced sometime around your birthday, too, so it must have been a great day all around.

If it weren't for the collaborations between my school and the local chapter of the Red Cross, I likely wouldn't remember to donate blood, either! Sweden's donation program seems to have ensured that it's "self sufficient in blood products," though, so you have more leeway than I do in terms of being lax about donating.

It's amazing that I got accepted into the CLS program at all. My mother herself told me that she was unsure if I would be able to stand out from all of the other applicants, and she was simply being honest: I maintain a good grade point average, but have a poor community service record and weak extracurriculars. (My mother was also probably looking forward to having me at home for the summer, since I've spent more time at school than at home for over two years.)

I should be finding out where I'm going on March 1st -- let's keep our fingers crossed for Vladimir or Kazan!

I love the flicker meme. It's really pretty - I'll have to try it.

Congrats on the blood draw, and good luck with the paperwork! :)

It almost always turns out good-looking results, so please do fill it out when you get the chance.

Thank you very much! (Also, hello and welcome!)

Thank you. :') I feel embarrassed and useless when I read about what some students my age have managed to accomplish during their own "undergraduate careers," so this was a bright spot for me.

Here's hoping you can read my blog entries through all of the State Department's disclaimers! Just kidding.

Thank you so much! I'm sorry that I've been mostly absent on LJ for over a month -- schoolwork and paperwork for the CLS program are getting me down these days. I did find out that I'm going to Vladimir (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir), though! It's a very beautiful city with many old churches and museums.
