Personal Entry No. 5
First, here's an icon meme from [livejournal.com profile] ju_jei! (I would've translated it into Russian for you, but it's beyond my ability at this point. I'm sorry, I should be keeping up with my Russian more!)

1. Reply "MEME!" to this post, and I will pick six of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

Sakura icon

Kinomoto Sakura, the title character of Card Captor Sakura, looking either out onto the sun-filled alleys in Hong Kong or into a magical wardrobe. (I haven't seen the movie, so I can't say for certain what it is.) This is part of set of icons that I saved to my icons folder, but I unfortunately can't find the person who made them.

5 Centimeters Per Second icon

This is apparently Akari Shinohara, from Shinkai Makoto's Byōsoku Go Senchimētoru (5 Centimeters Per Second). The backgrounds from that film are lovely--I've read that Mr. Shinkai painted all of them himself, which would be remarkable if it was true. Regardless, I loved his use of color and light in all of the scenes I've seen thus far. I've only seen screencaps, though--5 Centimeters Per Second is yet another film I haven't watched. :(

Tekkonkinkreet icon

A street scene from Tekkon Kinkreet. The film was shown at my school this past year as part of a series leading up to a lecture by Roland Kelts, the author of Japanamerica and numerous essays on Japanese pop culture.

I saw the film shown the night before (Grave of the Fireflies, which I do not have the sensitivity and grace to discuss), and attended Mr. Kelts's lecture, but...I gave up Tekkon Kinkreet for a night of studying. Thus, it's yet another film I haven't watched. ):( I regret it--even though I didn't care for the animation style when I first saw a screencap in my local newspaper several years ago, upon further investigation I found that I liked it very much. If I ever get the house to myself, I can have a movie marathon of sorts!

Clow icon

Clow Read/Reed, the undisputed origin of the plots for Card Captor Sakura, TSUBASA RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE, and xxxHOLiC. He'll likely be the origin of the plot for Gate 7, mark my words.

I made this icon myself--instead of just coloring it and painting in a background, as I do for most of the icons I make, I also drew in just about everything to the right of the front of his neck. (I can't find the original image right now--I usually delete my bases once I've finished with them--but I'm sure some of you know what it is.)

Wataru icon

Mitani Wataru, the protagonist of Miyabe Miyuki's amazing Brave Story. Read it. Read it now! (The icon is actually from the film based on the novel, which is yet another that I haven't seen. >:( )

Unfortunately, the image is somewhat grainy, but it's one of the few good Brave Story icons I've found. (I'm still looking for Kutz icons.)

chrysanthemum icon

This is the icon I use for the "Momoism" posts (i.e., the icon and tutorial posts). I drew the chrysanthemums myself--even though peaches are the recurring theme around here, I just like drawing chrysanthemums more. The text is, literally, "Momoism" (Momoizamu). The whole thing is somewhat too pink for me (like the header of this journal), but I don't feel up to changing it just yet.

And here's another meme, taken from [livejournal.com profile] mairenn_k, which I'm sure you've also all seen before:

Give me a fandom and I'll tell you:

1. The first character I fell in love with.
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates.
5. The character I would shag anytime.
6. The character I'd want to be like.
7. The character I'd slap.
8. A pairing that I love.
9. A pairing that I despise.
10. Favorite character.
11. What my five favorite things about the fandom are.
12. What my five least favorite things about the fandom are.
13. Who my five favorite characters are.
14. Who my five least favorite characters are.
15. What my five favorite pairings are.
16. What my five least favorite pairings are.
17. Which character I'm most like.
18. What my deep, dark fandom secret is.

Finally, I have 85 92 icons ready to go. Unfortunately, I've fallen short on my promises--this was supposed to contain a much larger number of Fay, Kurogane, Fujimoto, and Eriol icons than it does now. I'm thinking that I'll set up a requests post soon to make up for it...

...regardless, the next post will definitely be the second icon post.

1. The first character I fell in love with: Sakura.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do: That would be a tie between Kurogane, Mokona, and Yuuko. I wasn't interested in Kurogane at first, and Mokona just annoyed me to no end (there's this song on the Best Vocal Collection that makes me want to kill myself). Yuuko seemed too selfish and unjust to me--which is far, far different than how she seems now.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t: OH GOD THOSE VAMPIRE TWINS. ಠAಠ

Also, I'm not as interested in Fay as the rest of the fandom--I don't dislike him, but I don't love him, either. I feel the same way about Syaoran/Junior: I like him well enough, but I don't understand why he has such devoted fangirls.

I also find King Fujitaka and Queen Nadeshiko disturbing, but that's another story for another day.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates: Well, I don't think the fandom appreciates Clow's virtues--they either ignore him, insult him by calling him a chauvinist or a man whore, or make him seem ridiculously effeminate. He was a wise and noble person!

On another note, there was Sakura bashing (especially when certain people celebrated her "death"), but that fortunately doesn't seem to be going on anymore.

5. The character I would shag anytime: NO.

6. The character I'd want to be like: Clow and Yuuko, to the extent that I would like the strength to follow my convictions to the end.

7. The character I'd slap: Fei Wang. I think everyone (in the fandom and the series) wants to slap Fei Wang.

I've also wanted to slap Junior on multiple occasions, but he's a much more forgivable case. That poor kid.

8. A pairing that I love: Clow/Yuuko. That's about it--I don't really get into shipping, to be honest.

9. A pairing that I despise: Anything pairing Syaoran with someone other than Sakura, Kurogane/Tomoyo, Fay/Chii, and Yuuko/Watanuki.

10. Favorite character: YOU SHOULD KNOW THIS BY NOW.

11. What my five favorite things about the fandom are: It's produced some wonderful (http://allelegia.web.fc2.com/main.html) artwork (http://bokuto.sakura.ne.jp/top.html), above all else. Some of the fans have a great sense of humor, and there's been some very thought-provoking discussions on the series. Also, the icons are amazing. :D

That's...four things. :\

12. What my five least favorite things about the fandom are: About 85% of the fandom. No, really--there are so many unobservant, thick-headed people in this fandom. I know that sounds rude, but it frustrates me to no end when someone persists in saying that Junior's parents are CCS|Sakura and Xiaolang, etc., etc. I also get annoyed at some fans' tendency to jump to conclusions, and to spread their conclusions around in as matter-of-fact a manner as if they were canon.

I don't like the way the fans portray the characters' relationships at times--especially Kurogane and Fay, since the latter is almost always reduced to a beautiful and weak..."uke."

I've already wrote about how upset I get with the fandom's portrayal of Clow and the unfair bashing of certain characters, so that would be all five.

13. Who my five favorite characters are: Clow, Sakura, Kurogane, Yuuko, and Tomoyo.

14. Who my five least favorite characters are: Fei Wang, Kamui, Subaru, Seishirou, and...Queen Nadeshiko. She selflessly sacrificed herself to save her daughter, but I can't help but think of her as just another cog in Fei Wang's plans. I know it's wrong for me to dislike her just because of that.

15. What my five favorite pairings are: Clow/Yuuko, Kurogane/Fay, Kurogane/Mokona, Fujitaka's relationship with Syaoran, and Clow's relationship with Sakura.

16. What my five least favorite pairings are: I've listed five above.

17. Which character I'm most like: That's...a difficult question. I think I'm just going to say "Shuuko" and leave it at that.

18. What my deep, dark fandom secret is: During the Infinity and Celes arcs, I only read this manga because Clow sometimes popped up in the background. /is ashamed

FANDOM MEME -- FINAL FANTASY TACTICS
(Reply) (Thread) (Link)
[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com on June 17th, 2009 03:25 am (UTC)
It's mostly Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, are you okay with that? /feels somehow inferior

1. The first character I fell in love with: That's a tie between Ezel and Montblanc.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do: Mewt, after he grew up.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Seeq Rangers.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates: Marche. Everyone hates that kid.

5. The character I would shag anytime: To reiterate and expand upon my response to [livejournal.com profile] timidity: NO. ಠAಠ

6. The character I'd want to be like: A geomancer!

7. The character I'd slap: Mewt, before he grew up.

8. A pairing that I love: I haven't played through Final Fantasy Tactics yet, and the Advance games have almost no plot whatsoever, so...there isn't much by way of pairings for me. Also, I've never been that interested in shipping things.

9. A pairing that I despise: See no. 8.

10. Favorite character: Montblanc.

11. What my five favorite things about the fandom are: There's a fandom for this?!

12. What my five least favorite things about the fandom are: WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME THERE WAS A FANDOM FOR THIS

13. Who my five favorite characters are: Montblanc, Ezel, Ramza, Agrias, and Frimelda.

14. Who my five least favorite characters are: Illua. Other than that, four randomly chosen Seeqs.

15. What my five favorite pairings are: This really is a redundant meme.

16. What my five least favorite pairings are: ...

17. Which character I'm most like: I would say Marche, most likely.

18. What my deep, dark fandom secret is: I thought up a backstory and everything for this one blue mage I had in my first save file for Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. I nearly cried when my brother accidentally saved over it.

He'll likely be the origin of the plot for Gate 7, mark my words.

You know he will. |D Seriously, I'm looking forward to get some new characters that we haven't seen before, but I find it hard to imagine that CLAMP would be able to stay away from crossover completely.

Hm, CCS for the meme?

[identity profile] outou.livejournal.com on June 17th, 2009 07:30 pm (UTC)
Considering how many characters we've already seen who can walk in dreams, it wouldn't be surprising at all if Hana came across some of them.

1. The first character I fell in love with: Well, I began to take more interest in CCS after I saw a doujinshi image of Sakura in a collage made by an older student while I was in elementary school--I had seen some episodes of Cardcaptors before then, but I didn't care that much about it. I liked her as soon as I saw her.

I liked Clow when I first heard about him, too, but it took me a while to find out what he looked like.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do: Tomoyo.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t: I wrote this before, but I don't understand why certain people like Xiaolang so much. Not the people who just consider him to be their favorite character, but the people who want to marry him.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates: I'm very fond of the Mirror Card (of all the Clow Cards--they're too often ignored!), who's often disliked by Touya/Yukito fans because the moronic Touya/heterosexuality fans try to paint her as Touya's love interest.

5. The character I would shag anytime: ...

6. The character I'd want to be like: Tomoyo, because of her great inner strength.

7. The character I'd slap: There aren't very many slappable characters in CCS.

8. A pairing that I love: It's not a pairing, per se, but I love the relationship between Sakura and Tomoyo.

9. A pairing that I despise: Anything that blatantly contradicts canon. Also Clow/Yue, since--even though I know Yue's feelings for Clow were romantic--I can't imagine Clow loving Yue in any other way than a father loving his child. (If you're reading this, JL, I'm sorry!)

10. Favorite character: Clow.

11. What my five favorite things about the fandom are: Surprisingly, there isn't a lot. But, like the TRC fandom, there are several people with wonderful senses of humor, and there's some good (http://www10.plala.or.jp/CNG/) fanart (http://kagomeuta.web.fc2.com/f.html) out there. (http://qed-777.html.tv/index.html)

12. What my five least favorite things about the fandom are: The way Sakura gets treated. I can't tell you how many illustrations I've seen with Sakura depicted as unintelligent, generically "cute," and dependent on Xiaolang. Actually, Xiaolang and Clow often have their characterization distorted, too, but not to such a great extent.

On that note, I'm also disturbed by the fact that sexually explicit images of the characters exist.

The fans who almost worship Sakura and Xiaolang's relationship annoy me, as well--it's charming, and they're well-suited to each other, but their union isn't going to bring about the Second Coming or anything like that!

Also, the fandom as a whole doesn't seem very inventive--I've seen little by way of interesting or thought-provoking material that interpreted CCS in a different way or tried to explore the characters more thoroughly.

Finally: the minor characters don't get enough love.

13. Who my five favorite characters are: Clow, Sakura, Tomoyo, Touya, and Meiling.

14. Who my five least favorite characters are: I'm not too fond of Nadeshiko.

15. What my five favorite pairings are: Tomoyo/Sakura, Eriol/Kaho, Sakura, Kero, Yue, and the Cards' relationship, Chiharu/Yamazaki, and Sakura/Xiaolang (when it's portrayed the way it should be).

16. What my five least favorite pairings are: Clow/Yue, Eriol/Tomoyo, Eriol/Xiaolang, and just about anything that defies canon.

17. Which character I'm most like: I think I would be closest to Rika, but I'm similar to Touya in some ways.

18. What my deep, dark fandom secret is: There's this one episode in the anime where, when Sakura is sick, Nadeshiko's ghost checks up on her. I saw the scene on television where Nadeshiko places her hand on Sakura's forehead, and as I didn't know about Nadeshiko then (I had just started watching Cardcaptors)...I thought the hand belonged to Clow's ghost.

Yeah, that delicate-looking hand with the ring and the frilly sleeve. X|

3. I never really understood that either. I mean, I can imagine that he's super dreamy and the ideal bf for someone who watches the show at the age of 9 or 10, but that there are people twice that age who still want to marry him (and even hates Sakura because she doesn't "deserve" him).... well, it's up to them, but...

8. I love their relationship too. :)

12. Seconding everything you said here. Though I'd probably add "badfics" to the list too. D:

13. Someone else who likes Meiling! I've almost felt bad for doing so since she's an anime-only character, but she was one of my favorites when I watched the show.

Oh, and thanks for the fanart links, I hadn't seen these before!

All right, then!

1. The first character I fell in love with: I'm not sure if I fell in love with any one character at first. I liked Watanuki when I first saw him, though, so I suppose he counts.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do: Yuuko, since I didn't care for her...unique morals (or lack thereof) at first.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Haruka. I don't dislike him at all, but I don't really care about him, either.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates: I liked the ghost woman who bonded with Watanuki and ended up nearly killing him--I think she had bad intentions at first, but ultimately came to love Watanuki as if he was her own son.

I don't think the fandom hates her, but it certainly ignores her and all of the other minor characters.

5. The character I would shag anytime: >:o

6. The character I'd want to be like: I admire Himawari for being able to remain so cheerful even in the face of all of the misfortune she's brought upon herself and others.

7. The character I'd slap: Kohane, when she asked Watanuki if her being hurt at his being hurt meant that she liked him. I'm fond of her otherwise, but--Kohane is neither a persocom nor a high-level psychic raised in a cage by the government, if you know what I mean.

Also, every person who insulted or hurt Kohane.

8. A pairing that I love: Clow/Yuuko.

9. A pairing that I despise: Yuuko/Watanuki. I find Yuuko to be too much of a mother figure to him to be Watanuki's love interest.

10. Favorite character: That would be difficult to say...

11. What my five favorite things about the fandom are: I can't think of much, since I'm not as involved with the xxxHOLiC fandom as I am with others. (Also, appreciation for xxxHOLiC seems to be downplayed.)

There's some beautiful (http://ccc55.web.fc2.com/ho/) fanart (http://nanka.fem.jp/top.html) out (http://www3.to/kougyoku/) there (http://members.jcom.home.ne.jp/shimarisu_k/), at least. (http://fuo-web.net/) :D

12. What my five least favorite things about the fandom are: Some fans focus too much on Watanuki and Doumeki's relationship, to the point where they seem to prefer fanservice over actual plot.

It's the same for fanart--almost all of it, it seems, focuses on Watanuki and Doumeki together (usually in an inappropriate manner). In this vein, Watanuki's usually rendered as overly effeminate, which I dislike.

Part of the fandom seems to be emotionally immature, as I've seen far too many comments calling for Yuuko to come back from the dead, for certain customers to drop dead (for the smallest of reasons!), and for Watanuki and Doumeki to start smooching.

Also, it may just be me, but the fandom doesn't seem to have a particularly good sense of humor, either--that is, the part of the fandom that doesn't overlap with the CCS and TRC fandoms.

Finally: the minor characters really don't get enough love!

13. Who my five favorite characters are: Himawari, the old fortune-teller lady, Yuuko, the yumekai, and the Zashiki Warashi.

14. Who my five least favorite characters are: Fei Wang (he's indirectly in the story, so he should count as well), Haruka, and...that's about it. Some of the characters get on my nerves sometimes, but not to the extent that I would consider them to be my least favorite.

15. What my five favorite pairings are: Clow/Yuuko, the relationship between Himawari, Watanuki, and Doumeki, Ame Warashi/Zashiki Warashi, the relationship between Yuuko and Watanuki, and the relationship between Kohane and the old fortune-teller lady.

16. What my five least favorite pairings are: Yuuko/Watanuki, Watanuki/Anyone (since I don't think the focus of the manga should be him finding TRUE LOVE), Yuuko/Haruka, and any strange "crack" pairings.

17. Which character I'm most like: I'm not sure, to be honest.

18. What my deep, dark fandom secret is: I think Watanuki is a complete dork compared to Clow, and fortunately won't grow up to look and act like him. (He should be his own person!)

Ah you really should watch 5 centimeters per second. It has the best animation I've ever seen, and the backgrounds really are beautiful. I like the plot a lot as well, although it got a bit confusing at one point.

I name Pokemon for the meme! Bonus if most of the answers are actual Pokemon lol.

I can't wait for your icon post! ♥ Or just post anything you made, I'm sure they will be ten times as pretty than what I usually see ;')

Aaaaand this is really random, but I love the Mirror Card and her interaction with Touya a lot too. In fact, she's my favourite card in ccs /o/

Re: Late comment is late!
After reading TRC, I think I'll be prepared for any kind of plot. XD

Also, thank you! I've got 96 icons now, and I should be finished by the end of next week (hopefully).

1. The first character I fell in love with: Mew--but I also loved Pichu as soon as I saw it, too.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do: Venusaur. My first starter was Squirtle (which, come to think of it, was roughly ten years ago), but Bulbasaur was the first starter I got attached to.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t: I find that I don't care about the human characters as much as I do the pokemon.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates: WHERE ARE VENUSAUR's THRONGS OF ADORING FANS?!

5. The character I would shag anytime: Oh, for the love of all that's sacred, no.

6. The character I'd want to be like: That's a very good question!

7. The character I'd slap: Every Zubat in the game, as well as every opponent pokemon in the pokemon contests.

8. A pairing that I love: What?

9. A pairing that I despise: The pokemon on my team all share a bond of manly trust (even the females)--they frown upon shipping.

10. Favorite character: Fushigibana.

11. What my five favorite things about the fandom are: I-I'm not involved with the fandom, to be honest.

12. What my five least favorite things about the fandom are: Again, I'm not involved with the fandom, so I wouldn't know.

13. Who my five favorite characters are: Venusaur, Masquerain, Mew, Froslass, and Honchkrow.

14. Who my five least favorite characters are: Zubat, Roselia, Golbat, Bibarel, and Garchomp.

15. What my five favorite pairings are: I've made my feelings clear!

16. What my five least favorite pairings are: The ones that exist.

17. Which character I'm most like: Well, on the online Pokemon Mystery Dungeon test, I got both Turtwig and Bulbasaur.

18. What my deep, dark fandom secret is: When I first got a Bulbasaur in Pokemon Red, I named it "Lorelei" because I thought the name was pretty.

When I transferred that same Bulbasaur to Pokemon Silver, I found out that it was male--but I still named my Bulbasaurs "Lorelei" after that.

I tried getting a female Bulbasaur once, but it didn't feel right. :(

Haha that's so true! 5cm/s is those slice-of-life show, so it isn't that bad. I was slightly confused when the "time skips" take place.

I don't really care about the humans in Pokemon either, except I like Dawn/Hikari's design a lot (she's got a pretty name too!). And lol at those poor Zubats.
I always nickname my Eeveelutions with female names too when most Eevees are male :( (And I got Mudkip on that Mystery Dungeon quiz |D)

Wow, 96 icons! *A* This is making me so excited...are 30 of those from that Syaorans splash page? xD

Re: Late comment is late!
You don't know how much I've wanted Game Freak to allow the trainer to participate in battles, just so that I could smack every Zubat that messes up my pokemon's training. D:<

I usually do like the character designs in Pokemon, but I've never thought much of their characterization. Maybe the new remakes will add in a more developed plot and characters, or perhaps the fifth generation of games will.

And yes, thirty of those icons were from that one splash page! (I've made 104 now, though--I just finished with two other large images.) Like I wrote in the entry, I think I'll be setting up a requests post so that all of the people who wanted icons of characters other than Syaoran can finally get what they asked for.
