Personal Entry No. 5
First, here's an icon meme from [livejournal.com profile] ju_jei! (I would've translated it into Russian for you, but it's beyond my ability at this point. I'm sorry, I should be keeping up with my Russian more!)

1. Reply "MEME!" to this post, and I will pick six of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

Sakura icon

Kinomoto Sakura, the title character of Card Captor Sakura, looking either out onto the sun-filled alleys in Hong Kong or into a magical wardrobe. (I haven't seen the movie, so I can't say for certain what it is.) This is part of set of icons that I saved to my icons folder, but I unfortunately can't find the person who made them.

5 Centimeters Per Second icon

This is apparently Akari Shinohara, from Shinkai Makoto's Byōsoku Go Senchimētoru (5 Centimeters Per Second). The backgrounds from that film are lovely--I've read that Mr. Shinkai painted all of them himself, which would be remarkable if it was true. Regardless, I loved his use of color and light in all of the scenes I've seen thus far. I've only seen screencaps, though--5 Centimeters Per Second is yet another film I haven't watched. :(

Tekkonkinkreet icon

A street scene from Tekkon Kinkreet. The film was shown at my school this past year as part of a series leading up to a lecture by Roland Kelts, the author of Japanamerica and numerous essays on Japanese pop culture.

I saw the film shown the night before (Grave of the Fireflies, which I do not have the sensitivity and grace to discuss), and attended Mr. Kelts's lecture, but...I gave up Tekkon Kinkreet for a night of studying. Thus, it's yet another film I haven't watched. ):( I regret it--even though I didn't care for the animation style when I first saw a screencap in my local newspaper several years ago, upon further investigation I found that I liked it very much. If I ever get the house to myself, I can have a movie marathon of sorts!

Clow icon

Clow Read/Reed, the undisputed origin of the plots for Card Captor Sakura, TSUBASA RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE, and xxxHOLiC. He'll likely be the origin of the plot for Gate 7, mark my words.

I made this icon myself--instead of just coloring it and painting in a background, as I do for most of the icons I make, I also drew in just about everything to the right of the front of his neck. (I can't find the original image right now--I usually delete my bases once I've finished with them--but I'm sure some of you know what it is.)

Wataru icon

Mitani Wataru, the protagonist of Miyabe Miyuki's amazing Brave Story. Read it. Read it now! (The icon is actually from the film based on the novel, which is yet another that I haven't seen. >:( )

Unfortunately, the image is somewhat grainy, but it's one of the few good Brave Story icons I've found. (I'm still looking for Kutz icons.)

chrysanthemum icon

This is the icon I use for the "Momoism" posts (i.e., the icon and tutorial posts). I drew the chrysanthemums myself--even though peaches are the recurring theme around here, I just like drawing chrysanthemums more. The text is, literally, "Momoism" (Momoizamu). The whole thing is somewhat too pink for me (like the header of this journal), but I don't feel up to changing it just yet.

And here's another meme, taken from [livejournal.com profile] mairenn_k, which I'm sure you've also all seen before:

Give me a fandom and I'll tell you:

1. The first character I fell in love with.
2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do.
3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t.
4. The character I love that everyone else hates.
5. The character I would shag anytime.
6. The character I'd want to be like.
7. The character I'd slap.
8. A pairing that I love.
9. A pairing that I despise.
10. Favorite character.
11. What my five favorite things about the fandom are.
12. What my five least favorite things about the fandom are.
13. Who my five favorite characters are.
14. Who my five least favorite characters are.
15. What my five favorite pairings are.
16. What my five least favorite pairings are.
17. Which character I'm most like.
18. What my deep, dark fandom secret is.

Finally, I have 85 92 icons ready to go. Unfortunately, I've fallen short on my promises--this was supposed to contain a much larger number of Fay, Kurogane, Fujimoto, and Eriol icons than it does now. I'm thinking that I'll set up a requests post soon to make up for it...

...regardless, the next post will definitely be the second icon post.

Considering how many characters we've already seen who can walk in dreams, it wouldn't be surprising at all if Hana came across some of them.

1. The first character I fell in love with: Well, I began to take more interest in CCS after I saw a doujinshi image of Sakura in a collage made by an older student while I was in elementary school--I had seen some episodes of Cardcaptors before then, but I didn't care that much about it. I liked her as soon as I saw her.

I liked Clow when I first heard about him, too, but it took me a while to find out what he looked like.

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do: Tomoyo.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t: I wrote this before, but I don't understand why certain people like Xiaolang so much. Not the people who just consider him to be their favorite character, but the people who want to marry him.

4. The character I love that everyone else hates: I'm very fond of the Mirror Card (of all the Clow Cards--they're too often ignored!), who's often disliked by Touya/Yukito fans because the moronic Touya/heterosexuality fans try to paint her as Touya's love interest.

5. The character I would shag anytime: ...

6. The character I'd want to be like: Tomoyo, because of her great inner strength.

7. The character I'd slap: There aren't very many slappable characters in CCS.

8. A pairing that I love: It's not a pairing, per se, but I love the relationship between Sakura and Tomoyo.

9. A pairing that I despise: Anything that blatantly contradicts canon. Also Clow/Yue, since--even though I know Yue's feelings for Clow were romantic--I can't imagine Clow loving Yue in any other way than a father loving his child. (If you're reading this, JL, I'm sorry!)

10. Favorite character: Clow.

11. What my five favorite things about the fandom are: Surprisingly, there isn't a lot. But, like the TRC fandom, there are several people with wonderful senses of humor, and there's some good (http://www10.plala.or.jp/CNG/) fanart (http://kagomeuta.web.fc2.com/f.html) out there. (http://qed-777.html.tv/index.html)

12. What my five least favorite things about the fandom are: The way Sakura gets treated. I can't tell you how many illustrations I've seen with Sakura depicted as unintelligent, generically "cute," and dependent on Xiaolang. Actually, Xiaolang and Clow often have their characterization distorted, too, but not to such a great extent.

On that note, I'm also disturbed by the fact that sexually explicit images of the characters exist.

The fans who almost worship Sakura and Xiaolang's relationship annoy me, as well--it's charming, and they're well-suited to each other, but their union isn't going to bring about the Second Coming or anything like that!

Also, the fandom as a whole doesn't seem very inventive--I've seen little by way of interesting or thought-provoking material that interpreted CCS in a different way or tried to explore the characters more thoroughly.

Finally: the minor characters don't get enough love.

13. Who my five favorite characters are: Clow, Sakura, Tomoyo, Touya, and Meiling.

14. Who my five least favorite characters are: I'm not too fond of Nadeshiko.

15. What my five favorite pairings are: Tomoyo/Sakura, Eriol/Kaho, Sakura, Kero, Yue, and the Cards' relationship, Chiharu/Yamazaki, and Sakura/Xiaolang (when it's portrayed the way it should be).

16. What my five least favorite pairings are: Clow/Yue, Eriol/Tomoyo, Eriol/Xiaolang, and just about anything that defies canon.

17. Which character I'm most like: I think I would be closest to Rika, but I'm similar to Touya in some ways.

18. What my deep, dark fandom secret is: There's this one episode in the anime where, when Sakura is sick, Nadeshiko's ghost checks up on her. I saw the scene on television where Nadeshiko places her hand on Sakura's forehead, and as I didn't know about Nadeshiko then (I had just started watching Cardcaptors)...I thought the hand belonged to Clow's ghost.

Yeah, that delicate-looking hand with the ring and the frilly sleeve. X|

3. I never really understood that either. I mean, I can imagine that he's super dreamy and the ideal bf for someone who watches the show at the age of 9 or 10, but that there are people twice that age who still want to marry him (and even hates Sakura because she doesn't "deserve" him).... well, it's up to them, but...

8. I love their relationship too. :)

12. Seconding everything you said here. Though I'd probably add "badfics" to the list too. D:

13. Someone else who likes Meiling! I've almost felt bad for doing so since she's an anime-only character, but she was one of my favorites when I watched the show.

Oh, and thanks for the fanart links, I hadn't seen these before!
